BAND SHOPPING TIPS

Shopping around...
Contact several sources... independent bands, contractors, agencies. Some will be happy to talk to you on the phone, others will insist that you come into their office to look at band videos.  Whatever else you do, don't go into the office!  Ask the band or agent to mail you any paperwork or videos they want you to consider.

Shop by phone only... the office is where they'll put pressure on you to book immediately, like used-car salesmen.  And more importantly, it's where lies are told by people who wouldn't dare tell those same lies over the phone or put them in writing.  More on that later.

Don't tell an agent that you have seen any of his bands on videotape elsewhere, or that you have talked directly to band leaders. This seemingly harmless information can cost you dearly.

Compare sellers (agents) as well as bands...
Some agents use a network similar to the Multiple Listings in real estate, but they aren't necessarily offering the same band for the same price. By shopping around, you may save hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars on the band you want.

Does this agent overprice the bands you already know about?  Does he claim to represent bands (such as Retrospect) that you know are not available through agencies?  Does he pressure you to make a commitment right away, immediately after seeing his video presentation? Those are signs you should shop elsewhere.

Those wonderful videos...
Most sellers (agents and bands) use videotapes as the all-purpose sales tool, assuming that today's internet shoppers care more about convenience of shopping than about quality and value. They also assume that you are oblivious to, or tolerant of, the blatant misrepresentations that are often a part of these videos.

What are those videos, really?
They are seldom what you need to see, which is a live performance in front of an audience. Most are studio productions - many many hours of tape edited down to the best ten minutes.  And it's usually not even the band's own sound and lighting systems.

On some videos, the whole band is lip-syncing to their studio-produced master audio tape.  The best video could be made by the worst band, or vice-versa.

You need answers to some questions.
How loud do they really play? What does their own equipment look like? Do they stack ugly speakers eight feet high? Will there be a sound man in the middle of the room? Does their lighting look like it belongs in a stadium?  Read on...
